Teaching Toddlers: Rainbow Week (for Kiddos 15+ Months)

Rainbow Week

We’ve conquered red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple in so many fun ways. Now it’s time to recap them all with our final week of color – rainbow week. This week’s lesson focuses on sorting, mixing, and naming colors as well as finding rainbow objects in everyday life (ie. xylophones, beach balls, lollipops, and more)!

Activities/playthings to give your kiddo throughout the week:

Monday:

  • This week we are exploring rainbow items on our felt board – need some inspiration? Check out our felt board section below.
  • Give your little one an object from the activities list above.
  • Decorate the room! You’ve got all kinds of colors in your house – make a rainbow on the floor with your colored toys, use rainbow plates, hang rainbow tablecloths, and give your room some sass with rainbow tulle!

Wednesday:

  • Add a few items to your felt board and review/play! The older we get the more we talk about our objects and how they relate to books, things around the house, and/or toys. G loves the comparisons!
  • Give your little one an object from the activities list above.
  • Color Sorting Activity: See how we used blocks of color to sort toys!
  • Rainbow Bath: You know how we love our baths around here – just throw in a multi-colored bath bomb or some food coloring and let your kiddo splash their heart out!

  • Give your little one an object from the activities list above.
  • Rainbow Cups: This easy idea will help your little one organize colors and practice their fine-motor skills!

Friday:

  • Do anything and everything you can think off – nothing is off limits! I threw all of our felt objects in a bucket and helped little G pick out the correct colors and stick them on the felt board as I named them.
  • Sort straws in your muffin tin or thread them on your pipe-cleaners!
  • Get out all of your color jars and have your little one sort the colors between containers.
  • Use magnetic letters and your xylophone to put a new spin on your color matching activity! (see image below)

Tip of the Week:
Let your child lead their play this week…they know all of the colors now so can they bring you that green object from across the room? Do they want to pick a color to eat at lunch? Have they chosen a favorite color that they want to wear on Wednesday? Let them decide!

Well mamas, we have done it. Without the help of anyone else we have successfully taught our babies all about colors! What was your favorite part of our 7 week lesson plan?

Next week we start learning about the body so don’t forget to check us out on Facebook and follow us on instagram:DIYandDinosaurs for action shots of our lesson plans throughout the week!
